During medieval times, a young, ‘possessed’ woman was held in a monastery for six weeks, undergoing exorcism after exorcism to try and rid her of millions of demons. The Parson performing these rituals became obsessed with her and used exorcism methods that had by then been banned by the church. I read a research paper on this case, and it urged me to create a project around this woman named Kata.
Kata’s story is not a singular experience. I am using her as a vessel to address the women whose voices are lost in history. Through text and visuals, I attempt to create a space for Kata to exist as more than the non-local, possessed seducer that she was made out to be.
